You don’t need a full renovation to refresh your home’s look

With the median cost of a UK home renovation reaching £21,440 in 2024, according to the 2025 UK Houzz & Home Study, it’s little wonder that more homeowners are looking for ways to refresh their spaces without committing to a full project. The good news is that some of the most effective changes are also the simplest, and none of them require a builder or a lengthy wait.

  1. Add Colour with a Fresh Coat of Paint

Paint is the fastest, cheapest way to shift the feel of a room, and the impact of getting it right can be dramatic. A single feature wall in a warm earthy tone, like terracotta, sage, or deep olive, can anchor a neutral scheme and give a space an entirely different character in an afternoon. Current UK colour trends are moving firmly away from cold greys and stark whites towards the kind of grounded, natural palette that makes rooms feel lived-in and comfortable. If a full repaint feels too much, updating woodwork, skirting, or door frames in a contrasting tone is a lower-commitment option that still reads as intentional and fresh.

  1. Update Your Window Treatments

Windows are among the most overlooked opportunities for a quick refresh. Old or ill-fitting curtains can make a room feel shabby regardless of how well everything else is decorated, while the right treatment does several things at once, such as controlling light, adding texture, and reinforcing the overall design tone. Natural-finish wooden blinds for living rooms and home offices are particularly effective at adding warmth to a space that might otherwise feel flat, their grain and tone introducing material depth that fabric alone rarely achieves. They also work well in rooms where clean sightlines matter, sitting neatly within the recess without overwhelming the wall.

  1. Rearrange and Refresh Your Furniture

Before buying anything new, it’s worth trying a rearrangement. Changing the orientation of a sofa, moving a bed away from a wall, or pulling furniture away from the edges of a room can make a space feel both larger and more considered at no cost at all. In UK homes where rooms tend to be compact, the temptation is to push everything to the perimeter, but floating furniture creates a sense of intentional layout that instantly feels more designed. If the rearrangement reveals a gap, a single new piece, such as a side table, a lamp, or an armchair, chosen to complement what’s already there will do far more than a wholesale replacement.

  1. Bring Life In with Plants and Accessories

Few additions change a room as reliably or as affordably as a well-placed houseplant. A UKRI-funded research network involving the universities of York, Surrey, and Oxford is currently investigating how indoor plants improve air quality, regulate humidity, and deliver measurable wellbeing benefits, building on existing evidence that even brief exposure to indoor greenery reduces physiological stress and improves cognitive performance. Besides the wellbeing benefits, plants add colour, texture, and scale. Pair them with a few considered additions, such as coordinated cushions, a new throw, or a piece of artwork, and the cumulative effect is a room that feels genuinely refreshed.

  1. Enjoy Your Updated Space

A full renovation has its place, but it isn’t always the answer. Try one or two of these changes and notice the difference: a well-chosen blind, a newly painted wall, or a plant in the right corner can shift the atmosphere of a room far more than their modest cost suggests. The best home updates are the ones you actually notice when you walk in.
